2010E63 Transmission Won’t Revert to Automatic
Driving in “C” mode in my 2010 E63AMG. Downshift with paddles from (this is example) 7th to 4th. Then use brakes to stop at light. Car downshifts to 2 by itself. But on bottom of dash display, still says “D4”. When I step on gas (not touching paddles) car upshifts automatically 2 to 3 to 4 BUT WON’T GO BEYOND 4TH. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I STOP AND GO. UNLESS I USE UPSHIFT PADDLE, CAR WILL NEVER GO PAST D4 ALL DAY. For first four years I had it, it would refert to automatic if I didn’t touch paddles. Dealer not sure if it’s broke! Wants to wait till the day another 2010E63 shows up to compare. It’s broke right?

Mine works this way. The D4 (or D3 or D2, etc) is simply meant to limit the highest gear it will go in just like a regular automatic transmission in three or two or one or L mode. Whenever you want to go back into fully automatic mode just pull and hold the right side upshift paddle for an extra second.
