Limp mode

I recently purchased a 2011 E63 and was getting on it in sport mode when the car when into neutral and I coasted to the side of the road, turned off car and checked under the vehicle and found no leaks are anything so turned on the car and it functioned normally. Went beck into drive and all transmission shifts are normal again. Does anyone know why it would put the tranny in neutral when in sport mode not manual shifting.

I had a 2011 (2015 now) and triggered limp mode only a couple of times. However, it was likely due to having both a tune flashed on the ECU together with having a Sprintbooster for pedal response. This combo I believe was too much. After I removed the Sprintbooster I never triggered limp mode again. Also when I did get it the 2 times there was a bit of a pattern. It was when I was trying to get around an ah*le in freeway traffic. Basically, I was making a hard turn with the steering wheel while jumping on the throttle (so that I could get around an idiot texting or something). And when I was sent to limp mode, it DID NOT go into neutral. If this happens again, I recommend taking it to the dealer.

Good luck!

Use the key instead of the push button to start and shut off the car. If your car enters limp mode and goes into "neutral" you can use the key to turn the ignition off and start it up while the car is still coasting. Sometimes it's very difficult to pull over depending on the road situation. This way you have the option of pulling over if you want to or restarting while the car is coasting.

I logged while this happened and noticed the RPM had risen to over 6900 so I believe exceeding redline rpm could have triggered what you're describing, either due to transmission slip or some other cause perhaps.

Thanks, I noticed that it was at redline when this happened, I just added a pulley from agency power, wondering if this could have caused. I ordered a flash and tuned also after the pulley was installed.

pulleys have caused issues on this engine ... you can read threads on this

also a crank shaft pulley or just accessories? Get rid of them

Pulley AND a tune? Bingo! Somewhere in this combo lies your issue I would say. What does the pulley gain you? I had a Eurocharged tune through the OBD for an extra ~25Hp but was not aware of a pulley mod. Just curious if you really need the pulley. Maybe keep your tune and lose the pulley if it keeps happening.

I am having second thoughts with the pulley as well. It does rev quicker and noticed some gains, Agency Power claims 12 hp gains. I just purchased a set of MBH long tube headers and when I install very likely lose the pulley.
