DIY AMG Facelift wheel in 2010-11 E63
I installed a 2014 C63 wheel and airbag purchased from a forum member into my 2010 E63. Very simple. I'm not responsible if you trash your wheel setup doing this, just sharing how i went about it since it seems as if everyone's experience with it varies.
First pull your old wheel off.
1.) Set steering wheel straight, Disconnect battery. I taped up the terminals to be safe. Wait 15-20 minutes if you want to be cautious
2.) T30 Torx (either a key or t-handle, needs to be sort of long) to remove two bolts holding the airbag assembly in. They are held within the wheel, so loosen them until the airbag is free.
3.) Disconnect yellow airbag connector & black connector for the buttons, remove airbag, and disconnect maroon steering wheel connector. I also believe there is a green ground wire in there that can be slid off of its post.
4.) Grab a large breaker bar and a 10MM Allen head socket to remove the center bolt for the wheel. It has thread locker, so it takes some force to break it loose. An impact will work as well. Get someone to hold the steering wheel in place so you aren't banging against the steering lock mechanism.
5.) Carefully pull the wheel straight towards you, don't disturb the column right behind it. Notice the notches in the splined area, this makes it nearly impossible to line the wheel up improperly upon re-installation
6.) With the wheel off, unplug the connectors up top. From left to right they *should* be...
-Left Paddle
-(empty)
-LH/RH Button clusters (attached to airbag)
-Lane assist vibrator
-Right paddle
At least that's how mine was
7.) Take a T-25 Torx and remove 4 bolts holding the contact plate/bracket down.
8.) Flip over, unclip 4 tabs holding black plastic cover for steering wheel motherboard
9.) Very very carefully slide the board out from the housing. Do not bend the pins. Pull the board straight up and out, slowly.
10.) Remove 3 T-25 bolts on NEW wheel contact plate, flip over, and install the board into it. Carefully.
11.) Plug all connectors in, and reverse process. Blue Loctite on 10mm allen bolt. The new airbag pops in, versus the T30 torx on the old one.
Done.
So basically you are just swapping your motherboard that was obviously fully functional, into the new wheel.
Awesome upgrade that i'm upset about due to the fact i didn't do it earlier.
Everything works as it should, plug and play.
Onto the pics
