Which Michelins?

Hi All,
Time to replace the PZeros on my 2016 E63. Struggling with the choice between the Pilot Super Sports and the Pilot All Season 3 Plus's. I have dedicated winter tires but kind of like the idea of an A/S tire for several reasons, namely ride comfort and more durability. My question is will I lose a bunch of performance with going the A/S route vs the PSS? I'm ok with losing a little for the trade-offs I've mentioned but don't want to feel a lack of confidence in cornering. Any opinions?

Well I can't comment on All Seasons as I live in Southern California and we don't get much cold or rain. I have used "lesser" performance summer tires and yes you can feel the difference in sidewall stiffness in both comfort and performance. Comfort is obvious no explanation needed. Performance wise the turn in was noticeably slower and cornering was uneasy (Best word to describe it). But the thing about the "lesser" summer tires that really bugged me was the braking performance. It was very noticeably less even during everyday driving. Also a plus is that the Super Sports stick out past the wheel/rim a bit to protect a little against curbing. So you might notice the same things going A/S over Super Sports. I think the Super Sports are replaced by the Pilot P4S tires and are a bit more money now if that matters.

Thanks for the comments-I don't believe the Pilot P4S are made in our stock sizes-at least I didn't see them listed on TireRack.

Your right ps4s is not in our stock size pss is ur next best bet. I think all seasons are a big waste of money personally. I’d do pss like I just did for mine and when winter comes do dedicated winters.

You can run the PS4S in one width wider, forget the exact numbers. Search for Vrodman - he has a whole thread on it.
And yes - going to all season you will definitely feel it. In general - the stiffer the car and the more power the car has - the bigger the perceived difference.

You can run PS4S , front 265/35/19 rear 295/30/19

I run AS3+ on mine, replacing PZero's and I'm happy with the choice. Only other tire I would consider is DWS06.

First to consider, does your E63(s) have the wheel and tire protection ( warranty ) package.

If you have the wheel and tire package, you will need to purchase through Mercedes the MO ( none run flat ) or MOE ( run flat ) tires Michelin makes for Mercedes only cars and unless you have either, the wheel and tire protection wouldn’t cover the warranty claim unless you do.

PM me with your VIN and I’ll check Monday to see if Michelin has the MO PS4s tires in stock size for your E63.

MBusa is running a special right now, if you buy 2 tires, you get $75 off and 4 tires you get $150.

I recently switched to PS4S 265/35/19 front and 305/30/19 rear and could not be happier. Summer tires are better in the rain than All-Season tires. All-Season tires are only useful if you see snow or very cold temps.

305s on stock rims? Also any rub? Would be nice to get away with 305s instead of 295s if no clearance issues.

No rub. Stock wheels. Normal looking “bulge.” Diameter is exact match front to rear.

Fronts rub fender liner a little at full lock but only since I lowered the car.

I had the wheel and tire package previously and sourced other (non-MO) tires and subsequent claims were not blocked. This must be a recent change.

Thanks C for the mention here.

Here is the thread he is referring to:

https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...lled-rear.html

There is a lot of debate from one particular individual in the thread about the slightly oversized rear tire. I have had the P4s's now for 6 months and I love them. Nope, not tracking the car. But I drive it as spirited as anyone! No problems or issues whatsoever.

+1. I also run the AS3+, got them at Costco installed for under a grand. Better than expected in the snow for sure.

personally liked the pss better than ps4s....quieter

The best thing you can do for better grip handling feel for our cars is stiffen the chassis. Front upper strut bar rear strut bar inside of trunk and undercarriage bars. Our chassis are very soft, that’s why every time some of you go up a slight driveway you hear your pano roof pop or creek. Bars will dramatically improve the handling and make the car more nimble

Thank you sir! LOVE IT! I have a grey wagon as well. Looks like my next rear tire is going to be a 305. WICKED. Thank you.

Thanks for the info. Just dropped off my car, getting Michelin PSS to replace the stock P Zeros. Hopefully they’re much better from all that I’ve read. Price isn’t too much higher than tirerack and local installer, but more convenient for me.

Remember the promotion till July 30 is $70 off for 2 tires and $160 for 4 tires. Enjoy, you’ll love the PS4S over the PSS.

vdubpower 07-27-2019 01:35 AM
