so I made this interesting revelation when I felt like I'd replace my pads after 50k miles / 4 years of heavy regular street use and a light track use. Measured, they still have had 90% front / 70% rear material left. I however, felt like replacing them even though I was told "they are still fine". Maybe it was not necessary but I feel better about the job. Let me know your opinion.
I don't like this at all Pistons are touching here Surface still good though.. New ones.. Like new again
We thoroughly cleaned / polished / lubricated front brake calipers and reassembled. 1 side = 1 hour.
I'm sure your typical average MB service wouldn't bother and insert new pads in calipers without proper caliper cleaning.
Making sure everything works as it should, doing preventative maintenance and understanding (also being able to explain) what happens under extreme conditions is one the greatest skills of your mechanic.
