Cars with Turbo upgrades?
Hey all,
Wondering how many folks have done upgraded turbos a'la Renntech's "R3" package, or Kleeman's similar setup.
I realize it's probably rare due to the cost, just curious if any members here have done it, and the results? Does it turn the car into a grenade? Does it become annoyingly laggy for normal driving? Other thoughts?

Look at Pure Turbos in San Diego they've had some solid results - low end is about the same as OE (a tad better), but the upper end is way stronger.

Thanks for the answers guys. I’m on the hunt for my E63, and came across a car in Florida with low miles but Renntech upgraded turbos, and was wondering if it’s an interesting find or a “run away” kind of thing.
cheers!

It’s all down to how well tuned the car is. I’ve seen so many upgraded turbo cars that are running too high boost, especially low down the Rev range and they will be generating excessive heat. Unless they are running meth and or other cooling mods then I’d potentially steer clear. Engine intervals likely to suffer through accelerated wear and tear unless mapped properly with meth etc. Likewise massive boost early on in the Rev range will put pressure on the gearbox, there still isn’t really a cost effective upgrade solution here, so another risk to consider.

Thanks for the thoughts. All the work on this particular car was done at Renntech, by Renntech. Not sure if that is a mark in the "+" or "-" column.
I'll tread carefully - thanks for the thoughts. Have had lightly modded Audis as daily drivers for years, looking forward to the step up to a "grown up" version in the E63.

Call renntech and ask them specifically about this car ... tell them you're shopping it and want to make an informed decision they may be willing to discuss it

Peter,
Much appreciated on taking time to answer questions for a forum n00b. I do plan on talking with them, and since the car is only about 30 minutes away from Renntech, if it gets that far, I'd likely have them do the PPI as well, bringing the "Common Problems" thread that you've maintained ( https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...-w212-amg.html - thank you).
Is there a good forum member and/or resource on the forum to provide VIN's to inquire about service history etc to see if there are any red flags in the background of a particular car, or is it down to hoping to find an agreeable local at a MB dealer here in town?

if the dealer won't do it then try carfax as it'll have most major service records where Benz performed the service and also you can post on w212 non amg forum here and someone can get you VMI for free

I would buy it as long as it passes a ppi and isn’t significantly more than other similar cars without the upgrades. That’s a ton of money invested in that car I’ve noticed Renntech Mercedes fetch a little bit of a premium in the used market. I’m sure that car has been well maintained if the po was willing to drop that kind of coin on those upgrades.
