When the 6.3 V8 came out in '08, the selling point was that it was the first completely AMG designed and produced engine.

This left me wondering, is the same true for the next gen, 5.5 TT V8? Because although a phenomenal motor, it doesn't seem to have the same "racing" characteristics as the 6.3 and seems to be more of the classic AMG tuned Mercedes engine.

The M157 engine is heavily based off the M278 Mercedes engine in the '550' models.

BMW M's S85 V10 engine came out around the same time as the M156 '6.3' (6.2), these were more or less ground up designs. That ERA is gone.

Mercedes and BMW make most of their high performance engines now based off the normal series production engines.
One can say this is saving companies BIG money and R&D, but also, more reliable engine for the end user.

the 156 having all its ridiculous and material choice flaws, I'm glad benz said amg doesn't get to design/make engines anymore.

If you think that is bad, BMW M5 S85 V10 was a miracle if you could go on a roadtrip and make it home with the engine in 1 piece.
Ask me how i know: I built, tuned, repaired, and was friends with some of the top builders and factory tuners of the S85.

The M156 was leaps and bounds more reliable lol.

I put 98,000 miles on an E60 M5 and the motor was the one thing that never gave me an issue. I then put 70,000 miles on an ‘09 E63 and nothing ever gave me an issue.

That is EXTREMELY rare for the E60 M5, you had yourself a great run!
I am still currently the Main Moderator over on M5board for the E60 M5 section, and boy, are those stories rare.
