E63 AMG showcase M278 engine in instrument cluster?

Hey
Today when I checked the "hidden" menu in my 2012 e63 (M157) it shows engine type: M278?
Made me a little bit confused.
Anyone checked this in their cluster?
Does it show M157 in yours?

How does one get into the hidden menu?

When you get in the car. Turn key to position one. Or one push on start button with your foot off the brake.
Then push and hold call button and ok button at the same time for a couple of seconds.
Then the menu shows up in your cluster :-)

Perhaps because the M157 engine is a variation of the M278 engine, as was the case with the M113 engine where they had different variations (M113 Mercedes, M113 AMG N/A, M113 AMG K)

I’d do it but I’m getting a M157-priced maintenance job on my supposed M278. $150 air filter, $180 oil change, $150 rear diff and $750 tranny flush. You could buy a used Honda with these kind of prices.

Pretty much the same engine so parts are going to be identical from from here and there .

Same engine parts maybe. Higher pricing and frequency, for certain. The salesperson that sold me the car left me these parting words, “it’s an AMG, you are going to pay AMG prices...”

For what it’s worth, I’ll gladly pay a G for maintenance on a car that puts big fat grins on my face everyday. My E550 on the other hand, heartburn city for dealer work.

Thanks! Wow 750 for tranny flush puh! I recently did diff, engine, trans oil change. And spark plugs. Bought all the parts myself. Then a independent workshop did the work. Parts approx $650 and labour $660. Altough just oilchange in tranny not flush.
I went with NGK SIZKBR8A8HS sparkplugs.
But now in hindsight I worry about the indexing of the sparkplugs!
I talked to the mechanic that did the job. He had no clue about any indexing. Just said he torqed them to 23nm.
Is this something to worry about?
I think renntech sold this sparkplug a couple years ago. So they should work you can think?
Dont want to end up with a melted piston!

I guess I should clarify, the trans service was the full service which includes dropping the pan, cleaning the magnets, putting in all new gaskets, o rings and filter, flushing the fluid through the cooler and reassembling with new bolts. After I saw that process it made the sticker shock a little less so. Maybe all those steps are not needed but for a car still under warranty and potentially going in for a TCU tune I don’t want to skip steps.

As far as the plugs go, others have mentioned that stock plugs will properly index if torqued to spec. I’m not sure how accurate that is and mechanically I wouldn’t personally trust it, but if the dealer does the work and they melt your engine, they just bought you a new one!

Yeah I know its quite a bit of work. They did the same on mine. Just without flushing the cooler.
I did not do my work at a dealership. I did it at an independent mechanic shop.
My car is an older one (2012) so I have no warranty to think about. Also have a tune and downpipes, filters fitted.
Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to go with one step colder plugs.
But now I have second thoughts

Something to worry about - yes! Is it a rationale worry, who knows.

23nm appears to be the OEM plug torque spec, but does that align with the threads and geometry of the NGK plug? Maybe not? And did the tech torque it dry or wet (with anti-seize)?

I don’t profess to be an auto mechanic but I wouldn’t sleep well at night unless I knew these things were properly indexed especially with a tune. Others may feel completely different.

Good luck!

Crazy -- I paid $717.09 for trans and diff service at MB Arlington a few weeks ago.

yeah, but did you get a free car wash with that price?? Checkmate.

Tysons sucks, Arlington screwed me on my E550 so now I drive up to Euro in Bethesda. I guess they have to pay for their fancy pants renovation and they know they probably have a captive customer base with all the millionaires there. So I got a little hosed. They did replace a 5 year old battery under warranty so that was kind of them.

My boat delivers tomorrow so I’m getting hit with the double financial whammy. 1% problems.

No free car wash, then again it didnt need one nor would I want it. In fact the Service Advisor had the tech put my car back in the service lane when it was completed, "because it is way too clean to park outside". No doubt the renovations will be very nice, hope you at least get to enjoy them!

Nice! Congrats on your newest money pit

definitely want to make sure your plugs are indexed properly - here's the MB bulletin about the importance of proper indexing of plugs on the m157 motor and possible damage to the piston if not done propertly...
