DWS06

Third set now. Had them on my E55, currently on my GTI and now pulled the Super Sports and installed DWS06 on the E63S. Ready for cold weather ahead.

I had both, and can tell the Conti's DWS06 have softer sidewall, slightly more wobbly in slalom than Michelins Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Both are great tires.

Slalom with four season tires?

I have them on my '08 C300 and '15 535i. I love everything about the DWS06 except how they flat spot every. freaking. night.

I notice that more in the cold months. I have had that also happen with my PSS and BFG Comp 2 AS.

I'm guessing you run all seasons in the colder months (Nevada climate?) and the swap to summer tires in the warmer months?

I've had good experience with DWS tires but those go on DD year round cars for me that have next to no power. Good enough for NE winters as long as you aren't an idiot when it snows. But any time I've had them they come with the car and I find myself switching over to Michelin's when the time comes for a new tire.

Which leads me to second'ing (not a word) your thoughts on the whole... "slalom on an all season tire in a 600hp/600tq 4800lb car?" ....... *shivers*

Yep. I have used DWS06 in Denver and in Reno for the winter months. Lately have left them on also during warm months as I do not really drive aggressively enough to warrant a summer tire.

Okay, zig-zag and cornering if the term slalom is reserved for summer tires.

All of this is to say that this is a more pronounced difference worth pointing out. I drive on a single set of all-season tires in MD, DC, VA, WV. Softer and grippier tire is better for acceleration on street. Not much opportunity to experience roadholding Gs, but acceleration is about the only thing you can do in town more or less safely. For this reason, all-season on 18" is more practical than any other setup for me.

I love the Reno area. Too bad had to move 8 years ago. Some day, perhaps...

Word on the street is Reno is an up and coming place. My Dad lives in Vegas so I have plenty of time out there and always thought of Reno as cheap Vegas. But a buddy of mine is about to land a job there and according to him it has a little silicon valley 2.0 vibe to it.

Anyway, interesting take on the all season tire being better at grip therefore accelerating than a sport tire. I'm not so sure that softer and grippier are synonymous here. Maybe I'm misinterpreting something here... But a summer sport tire (pss/ps4/pzero/etc) is going to grip and go for straight acceleration better than an all season tire. All season tires really aren't that great because they aren't the best at either performance or winter / cold / snow. They are just average at each which is okay... But yeah, a summer sport is going to be better for acceleration on the street.

Have you ran a dedicated summer sport tire on your E63 yet? If not I think you should.

Not sure if that was directed to me?

No no, max. And no disrespect to max either, just asking if he has run the car with summer tires or not yet. I mean I understand really casual daily driving and all seasons being good enough... But you're definitely leaving some performance on the table untouched on an all season.

I had Michelin Pilot Super Sport on 19" and agree that summer temps and good roads match greatly. Prepped surface is even better. My impression worth pointing out is like on rails - extremely stable, smooth, predictable. The downside quickly shows on roads with debris, imperfections, pot holes, wet surface, not to mention unsafe in snow or even the slightest icing. Mind you, my E63 is RWD. If I lived in southern states like FL, TX, AR, CA or tracked, my choice of tire would likely be different. I agree with your point on UHP summer tires - they are the best in proper conditions, no doubt.

Worse in every regard except lifespan and snow traction.

I have DWS06s as my winter tires since it doesn't snow here all that much but it's more than cold enough for summer tires to not be usable year round.

So even quieter and more affordable than DWS06?

More expensive but quieter. The DWS06 is known for being a loud tire.

On the shoulder
I have had the DWS before. I personally prefer the PS AS3 (which I just mounted as my "winter" tire on the E63). I don't drive when there is snow/ice on the road if I can avoid it (salt is bad) - I take public transport to work, so it is not necessary for me to drive in bad conditions.

I believe it's personal preference at this point, though. Both tires are good and somewhat similar.
