Tilt Steering Wheel Problem

So my power tilt steering wheel is acting up. It goes to the highest position upon shutting off the car. A day or two ago it quite moving back down when I start the car (i.e. it is stuck in the highest position). It will still telescope in and out, but not up or down. When I press the lever up or down, I can hear the motor trying to move it but nothing happens. I need to dig into WIS to see what might be the problem, but I thought I would also ask here. Anyone have any idea what it might be?

Thanks.

I moved the steering wheel all the way towards the driver's seat, then pushed down on the lever and hit the top of the steering wheel a few times .. after doing this, I wondered if it would be possible to somehow set off the airbag . So I switched to pulling down on the steering wheel while pushing the lever down, and after a few tries it freed itself. Thanks!

Too many to list
Awhile ago, I had the opposite issue. The steering wheel would go up and down but not telescope. The dealer said something was binding and they loosen it and lubed it; haven't had any issues since then.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to give it a go today and see what happens.

The bulletin says to then perform a software update, I assume it turns the motor off at a lower torque so it doesn't jam as hard."

That's what I did and it worked. Make sure you turn off easy exit feature so it doesnt happen again.

So it did the "whack the wheel" thing and it unstuck it. It worked and then jammed next time I parked the car. I did it again to unstick it and then shut off the easy exit feature. If it's covered by my extended warranty, I'll get the dealer to look at it next time I'm in. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the update!

My electric lumbar adjustment on my Sequoia got stuck in the highest position so I tore the seat apart. Found that it’s a simple mechanical actuator with a metal rod and at the max setting it got stuck due to lack of lubrication. Giving it a good pull resulted in the bar breaking free and it now works fine.

Similarly my guess is there is some design element on the Merc tilt that gets stuck and the motor cannot overcome it. Had the same issue on my E550 and was also solved by physical force.
