Trunk won’t open, rear backup lights and camera don’t work

Just my luck, I noticed today while backing up the rear backup camera didn’t turn on, all I got was a black screen. After a few seconds the message came up on the centre display saying the 2 reverse lights are out. While trying to open the trunk the handle did nothing, the fob doesn’t work, and the button inside the trunk doesn’t work either.
The only way to open the trunk is to use the manual key in the trunk.
I feel that it may be the SAM. I’ve opened up all the interior trunk panelling and all wires seem in tact and no moisture to be found. Any ideas?

Yes. The +12V wire snaps at the hinge over time and in cold weather.
  1. Remove plastic cover (unsnap several tabs) on the left hinge.
  2. Undo soft wrap insulation on the wire bundle.
  3. Locate the thickest (brown) wire in the bundle where the bundle leaves the hinge. You will not miss it; the 20cm section where it flexes.
  4. Trace it to locate the break and repair.
  5. Test and reassemble.
Sometimes the +12V wire breaks completely, and so you see the 2 ends. Other times the copper strands are broken inside insulation. You can locate visually and/or by hand. Post back if this was it.

Hope this helps.

Well... it went from bad to worse. Left the car outside last night. Thought I’d bring it in and take a look at the wiring on the hinge and I got an “airmatic malfunction” message. Going to have to leave the car at the shop tonight before the car looses all air. This leads me to believe it is the SAM failing. Considering the airmatic has nothing to do with wiring within the problematic hinge area.
will give a full rundown of the fix when it’s back. On a positive note, I think I’ll tune my car while it’s at the independent repair / performance shop.

Turn out the rear SAM was failing. Replaced the SAM with a new Mercedes part at my local mechanic. The world is great again

Is that still a thing in the 212?
