I have had a persistent oil burning smell over the last few months and noticed some oil drops on the bottom drivers side of the motor during my last oil change. I took it into a shop on Monday and they confirmed a leaking driver valve cover from the bottom rear corner. These use sealant and do not have a gasket, so to fix the leak, the cover comes off and all the old sealant has to be removed. This is about a 10hr job to pull everything off, clean it up and put it back together. The real pain is that you need to remove the oil feed lines in this process……and they are plastic, and get brittle over time from the heat, so they typically break and crack on removal…..mine did as well, so another $750 in parts added to the labour. Apparently my shop sees leaking valve covers and front timing covers quite often. My car only has 34,000 miles.
