2015 E63S Coolant expansion tank leak- DIY or shop job?

Hi all, I have a 2015 E63S that I just purchased and I have noticed coolant leaking around the seam of the expansion tank. I am curious if this is a DIY type job and if so does anyone have any insight? I am using the car for a roadtrip on Friday so I either need to take it in or change myself tomorrow. Thank you in advance for your help. I will try to upload a pic too but its the expansion tank that looks molded together and it is leaking at that seam.

It seems common from my research but I cant seem to find any instructions for changing it.

Dude in the video does not show you how to do it, but seems like, if the tanks are the same for the E550 and the E63, that all you do is disconnect two lines, a sensor and pull it up.

Thank you both. I watched the video and although the video turns off at the time I wanted to see it does seem rather ok to tackle myself. Thank you!

do you know if I need to bleed the system after changing or do I just top up and let it run with the cap off for a few mins?

I don't know. According to the video, this dude simply topped it off and he called it a day. Hopefully someone who has done the job can chime in.

in case anyone comes across this issue in the future it was a relatively easy DIY job and the part was $94 from Mercedes.

Maybe opening myself up here....but, for $350...sure, that for me is about two hours of billable time. I could easily hire someone to replace it...but, my father taught me to be a man and fix my own things. The way I see it, if some guy who is at work high most of the time can fix it...so can I. The only thing in life I have not figure out how to do well is finish drywall and drywall repairs....I guess you need to be high and not very bright when you do that. The rest....heck, half the fun of cars is tinkering and fixing them. Not long ago I put a new SAM in my other cars and decided to put all new head gaskets on it...just on a whim (C240).

So, yes. I have the 15 minutes and the brain power to replace a freaking coolant tank.

Yeah just gave mine a good once over . No leaks, but upon a closer look you can see small hairline cracks on the engine side of the tank .. Replacing proactively for sure. Just to confirm this is the correct coolant for the 212's - oem pink 325.6 spec ?

I purchased a Gal of the Merc. coolant back in May form FCP. It was under: MER-Q1030004. I went into my acct. with them and their site gives me an error message. Maybe it's currently unavailable. It definitely is not pink. It's dark blue.

Mission accomplished!

Hey all. I just went through this myself. Do I go to the dealer, mechanic or man up and tackle myself? Did my research (multiple times at that). Ended up getting the black light dye kit so I was 100% sure where it was leaking. Kit was like $30 for dye, glasses and black light. Once I confirmed where the leak was then ordered the $100 coolant expansion reservoir from dealer (actually had it in stock) and replaced myself. Was pretty straightforward and I did follow the same instructions in the YouTube video above basically. Only took me about 1hour since it was my first time. Since it’s a known issue I figured I would do it myself so I knew what to do down the road. Plan on keeping the car till death so for me it made since. Even with the wifey saying “you are going to mess up your car’, I felt so much better afterwards when there was no leaking and no more coolant low messages. I could definitely see where it was leaking once I got the old one out. I bought the car at 35k miles and replaced at 77k so not sure if it was the first one. I recommend spending some quality time with the E63 on this one for sure. Too easy!!

First off, this is a fairly easy DYI for those who aren't fully confident in their ability to replace it themselves. A couple of notes to help you out.

1. You'll need to either siphon out coolant in the tank or do this at the same time of a coolant change.

2. Assuming you didn't do this at the same time as a full coolant swap, if there's concern of air getting in the system, you have two options to refill it: 1. You can use a vacuum fill method using the expensive coolant fill tool or 2. You can fill it and "burp" the air out of the system using the old school method of idling the car with the heat on at full blast while the car reaches operating temps. This will take no less than 25 minutes with these cars but works fine.

3. If you did do this at the same time as a coolant swap, refer to my 2nd note above.

Enjoy.

I second a diy. Each time I’ve had the coolant done under the dealers care (warranty stuff) I get a low coolant light a few days later. Regardless of if they use their fancy systems, I personally feel a drive and burp is needed, so why even use them in the first place. Not sure if it’s the norm but it’s 2 for two for me. I’ve never had that issue when doing it the old school way. If it can’t be done with a burp, there may be some other greater issue, imo such as a thermostat or pump issue. First park on an incline with the nose up, coolant overflow higher than the engine. Heat her up to operating temp with windows open and ac on full blast (to warm it) then switch to heat to open the heating circuit. As long as it doesn’t read low here, give a few good revs to get the coolant flowing. This will take about a hour depending where you live since our intercoolers keep the engine temps very low. Then shut the car off and let it completely cool for a few hours at least. Check it when the engine is as cold as it can get and it is the coolest time of the day which can help ensure that the fluid is not expanded, giving a false reading. Then, fill the overflow tank up to the seam/internal overflow of the tank. Unfortunately, this is not the type of vehicle where you can watch the fluid swirl around and see the bubbles come out. If you stay by the car while you do this work, you can leave the cap off, but that doesn’t negate the necessity of the cooldown for proper fluid levels.
