chattering windshield wipers- solution
For the last few years I've had chattering wiper blades. I changed them out twice and then learned from this and the w212 forum that it's a common problem. I tried Rain-x many times as well as clay bar cleaning and ceramic coating, nothing worked. I recently took another stab at it, I called the technical service department of 3 or 4 wiper manufacturers. I discovered that the graphite infused into some of the top tier blades was only to reduce UV damage to the blade itself not to reduce friction. I settled on the Trico silicone ceramic blade part # 90-240. I'm happy to report the chatter is gone, not sure how long it will last but I just wanted to share my findings....

Yes, over time, the wiper components deteriorate and develop play. Here is my list of remedies in the priority order:
- Reduce resistance on glass is the simplest remedy (polished glass, fresh blades, coatings).
- Reduce play/tolerances in external parts.
- Improve spring tension (repair or replace arms).
- Reduce play/tolerances in internal parts (repair or replace mechanism).

The only time using OEM wiper blades didn't solve the problem was when the wiper arms had gotten bent.

Twist the wiper arm gently a few degrees in the direction of the chatter, so the blade can more easily fold over to that side.
If you go too far, the other travel stroke will start chattering. You'll have to find the sweet spot for both moves.

The Trico ceramic blades that I put on when I started the thread are holding up well, still no chattering! I can't comment on the oem blades, The first set that came when I bought the car chattered but I dont know where the previous owner got them, The sets that I put on prior to the ceramic ones were name brand but not oem.

Next time you need wipers, give the OEM blades a try for another datapoint. I’m pretty confident you won’t buy anything else once you’ve used them.
