camshaft adjuster replacement
Hi everyone, I’m replacing my camshaft adjusters currently on my 2010 e63 amg, really haven’t been able to get started on much because I’ve been having trouble making sure the cams are timed correctly. When my passenger side is correct and the retaining piece fits over the cam, it’s usually off slightly on the driver side, the side where the adjusters are failing most. I’ve turned the crank over 30 different times trying to get it all correct and I can’t seem to get it. Also I’ve had struggles with trying to fit the retaining tool in the back of the cams. If anyone has any help or advice to give let me know! Or any helpful videos I appreciate it all!

Some cars come a little off from bank to bank. The ECU can adapter for that discrepancy (within a few degrees). Just rotate the engine till the cam holders fit one side, then rotate till they fit the other. When you reassemble is when you want to make sure they are both set to the same. You will need to do a camshaft adjuster adaptation through Xentry, if you have access to that software. Any of the normal youtube videos show the adjuster removal process pretty clearly.
Do you mean the retaining tool isn't fitting in the hole in the back? There are two 'holes' in the back of the adjuster but only one allows for the tool to be inserted. If it isn't on the top, be sure you have the cams in the right place by using the flat plate on the rear of the cams. If you mean that you can fit it in the back with the camshaft lock in place, retaining tool can go on after you break the adjusters free and remove the camshaft lock. I do not use the retaining tool anymore, I put small bolts through all of my adjusters prior to installing the camshaft lock.
