AMG vs. E550 with mods
I’m looking at buying a 2014-2016 E63/E63s because I want the M157. However, I see E550 (with the 278) in the same year range for almost half cost of the AMG. Approximately $35-40K versus $18-25K.
Then I was watching tuners like Weistec, RennTech, etc. and seeing I could get a Stage 2 with the upgraded ECU, air flow, exhaust, turbos, etc. for $10-15K.
I still prefer the AMG, but I also like saving $8-10K. …And I was planning to strip the badging to be more stealthy and don’t care much that panache.
Am I crazy or am I onto something? Besides the IWC clock, what else am I losing for the price difference?

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
Search posts by @nota_amg .. he had a fairly modified m278 e550 and wrote all about it
I had a 2014 e550 before the e63 and the biggest different is the exterior aggressive look and the wider wheels ... then the stiffer suspension and loudness.
tuned I couldn't tell you, but performance wise you'll get a lot out of the m278 due to the turbo charging. It shares some strengths and a lot of weaknesses of the m157. The e63S has the LSD and both e63S have better steel brakes than the e550, and there's the option to find an e63 with ccb's. Airmatic is all four corners on the 550 and just the rear in the e63.
You can't go wrong with either if you absolutely don't care if its an amg
check out the first section of this sticky and you'll see the DOG and the e class brochure to learn lots more of the cosmetic and mechanical differences

As a current owner of a 63 (M157) and a 550 (M278) - the 278 costs FAR less to work on. Even the motor mounts (labor) was far lower on the 550 than the 63...so, there is that...
