Is the E63S Reliable?

Planning on a 2019 E63 for a DD. Never owned MB - always BMW, Audi and Porsche. My current RS7 is rock solid - never a single issue and has been abused.

Reading the forum and you get some sense that Mercedes has had some recent issues (capability to build and deliver on time, parts availability and gremlins). I understand that people typically post here when they have issues, but for those that have owned an E63 (2017-2018), do you feel the car and current model Mercedes are reliable? I get the "it's a complicated machine with lots of electronic capability" argument.

I have a few friends that have had issues with their 2017-8 S and E classes (differential, electronics, heat system, rattles). In one case it resulted in a complete car swap. Mercedes has in all cases stepped up - but makes me nervous.

I have deposits down for a 2019 E63s and a 2018 M5. The challenge with the M5 is that it's a new model/engine variant/new AWD system and user feedback is minimal - could be great or have equal/worse issues as MB.

Should I take the MB plunge?

Looking for thoughts. I honestly love both - originally hot and heavy on the E63S, but starting to lean towards M5.

Mine has odd electronic quirks.
- Touch sensor on door locks sometimes work and sometimes not (on both fob keys). If my fob is hand held closely to the door handle, then no issue. If it’s in my pant or jacket pocket, then it sometimes work and sometimes not.

- trunk opening with the use of inside the car door release button. It has some quirks as well. I lift the button and opens a bit and then stopped opening and closes it. I then have to lift the button again and until the door is fully opened. Just annoying.

Aside from that (thru 3 months+ of ownership), no major electronic and mechanical issues at all.

as in all cars, there will always be some issues. It comes down to luck , I suppose.

if I am to use my 2013 f10 m5 as comparison to this e63s, I had far more problems with the m5. Fuel pump, brakes ball bearing rusted in just a few months time, major coolant leak, excessive oil consumption. In the end, only 2 yrs of ownership of this car.

With respect to those issues, dumb question, but is your cell phone in the same pocket? I have similar issues with some of my other cars, when I forget and put the key fob in the same pocket as my cell.

cell is usually in my back pocket (most of the time). I also leave my cell in the car too and that issue happens on/off

I thought about the M5, very equal performance numbers or even slightly better, but no emotion. It looks very plain. I am coming from a R8 and an Alfa Quad so I wanted something to be less noticeable and blend in. I have a black colored car with no exterior modifications other than the wheels powder coated gloss black. I am surprised how many people stare at this car- normal people not just car junkies. So there is something about this car that grabs peoples attention. I just tuned the car so they say it is close to 700hp now. As everyone says, "Beast" is the word that adequately describes this car. Owned for about a month with no issues.

I think the E63s is very reliable and they had to buy my car back! We forget that these are 600hp super cars with very complex computer systems, diifs and awd systems. The only reason they bought my car back was it was just a lemon and I got it bad luck and you move on. Overall cars are so much more reliable than they were 15 years ago. I am 100% expecting small issues with the M5 and with the replacement E63s as these cars are complex and pushing the envelope. If I did not want to deal with any issues at all I would drive a Camry. Just the name of the game.

Well said and very honorable of you considering what you went thru. These types of threads usually only attrack those who have had issues as bad news loves to travel much faster. I think as a whole and not just board related, the E63S is probably doing just fine or on par with any other new gen AMG's. I have had a error free car thus far (knock on wood LOL) and beyond that, am really enjoying the driveability of the car from a handling, chassis feel, and launch perspective.

I do find that my media center aka Comand is very slow in certain processes (like advancing songs on an Ipod) but out side of that, its been a brilliant first 4 months.

Ours has had only one issue but a major one. About 1month ago, at 2,200 miles the engine went into limp mode, but operated normally after a restart. A couple days later the check engine light came on. The cause was a 3” crack along the seam of the Left Hand intake manifold. This was appparently the first one of these failures AMG has seen so they shipped a new one from Germany and the old one was sent to the manifold supplier for thorough analysis. Too bad, I would have liked to have the cracked one for a souvenir. The current theory is the bond between the 2 pieces was bad and the crack was there at assembly and just lengthened a bit with use.
It took 4 days to repair, we have the car back now, better than new. We completely like the car, would buy it again. The dealer took great care of us.

I don't think I've got anything useful to add about my own car--2 weeks and 1,500 miles isn't much of a road test. To be honest, I think the same is probably true of most since this model is so new. From what I've read, though, you're getting the only data that is available and, for the most part, it seems positive.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
Had good luck with mine, had it since last October. I think I might have a slight antifreeze-leak in the ECM cooler which I'll get checked in few thousand miles at the 10K service. But it's a real solid well built car just like my 2012 E63 AMG wagon was, thats one reason besides all the performance I bought another one.

I'm already on transmission #2 ; we'll see if this one holds. Actually looking for the perfect gts to trade for, but we'll see. I doubt all the trans will have issues, but there have been several full trans replacements on this car in n. America alone.

Just don't use race start on the track with tc
off and should be ok.
