Replacing lost emergency / backup key?

I was driving one of my other cars but needed one of the keys on the Mercedes key ring so just detached the emergency key from the remote and took only the keys with me and left the remote behind. Later when I returned home and was emptying my pockets I noticed that the Mercedes key ring was gone.
Presumably at some point when I pulled out the key ring for the other car, the Mercedes key ring must have gotten caught and pulled out of my pocket too unnoticed.
Not a big deal to replace the other keys I had on the ring but never have had to deal with replacing the physical key from Mercedes before.

Thankfully, the key/ring and my other keys were found and turned in to our security desk and waiting for me this morning. So crisis averted

But to confirm, this was just the metal key that inserts into the remote, not the whole remote. It has the keyring slot at the end. When I drive one of my other cars, it is easier to just remove the key/ring portion from the remote rather than remove the individual key I needed from the ring.
But if the keys hadn't been found, one would hope that the dealer could order just the metal backup key/ring and not the whole remote assembly. Hopefully I'll never need to know.
Going forward I will start the practice of linking the Mercedes key//ring into the ring of whatever other car I'm driving so it doesn't accidentally get pulled out of my packet and fall unnoticed as I believe happened this time.
I have a 2006 SL 550, I bought it with 1 fully working keyless-go fob (works 100%) & a non-genuine single battery non-keyless go fob (which works from buttons & starts the car - but no keyless capability from this key).
I asked for a quote from my main MB dealer for a new key & blade and stipulated that it work keylessly as well - or, asking if it (the car) would require programming. I even asked if it came with batteries. They confirmed that (aside from my having to jump through some security related hoops), that MB would pre-program the fob before it was shipped to the dealer & it would thereafter - "just work", complete with batteries 100% without any programming of the car - so to be clear - keyless-go/entry & the usual stuff working out the box when I got the new key.
Ok, great I thought - so I ordered, paid & collected the brand new key (with the new blade pre-cut too) aaaaaaand ...... nothing worked on the new fob - except, once the car was unlocked with another key, new key-fob put in the ignition - it would then start the engine but otherwise, it was totally useless.
So naturally, the batteries in the new fob were dead (measuring 0.00v with a meter). I was told - quote "your car is so old, the batteries in the new fob have died" - that is word for word what the MB deaer said (fume). So, I went out & bought 2 x new 2025 batteries & surprise surprise; the lock & unlock buttons on the new key-fob worked - BUT & you guessed it, no keyless entry or keyless go functionality; instead, the car simply said "key not detected" & of course the original MB key works 100% keylessly entering & starting - so I doubt the car has any issues.
So... have MB screwed up here? In that, is it possible that MB could have fully programmed my new fob - for the keyless entry/go functionality if the fob had totally flat batteries during the programming phase? I complained to the dealer & they effectively told me it's my car & I'll have to pay for diagnostics, unless the key is "faulty". I'm unsure how I will be able to prove the key is faulty...
Naturally; I'm a bit p*ssed off. So I asked their Parts Dept. to ask MB that question; i.e. does the fob not need to have had batteries installed during the programming phase for my car so that Keyless entry/go (not merely the transponder bit for the ignition) is set correctly?
MB refused to answer & instead told the dealer for me to have my car booked in, diagnosed & data sent to them - but again, I have to pay for the diag's.
So I'm p*ssed off - so I've raised a complaint with MB.
Thoughts please?
Thanks so much in advance!

The parts dept. should have told you that this key comes programmed but without keyless go features until the shop does their programming through Xentry.
Long story shirt; I went to see them, didn't kick-off, just reasoned with them & they're having a look at it on Thursday.
🤞
