Considering E63 S AMG Wagon
#51
Have not once doubted the decision to buy my E63 Wagon (coming from my 2nd GL63).
A standard wagon would have never have been on my short list.... (I'd go back to the GLS for 2020 as it will be a smokin great car... having the latest latest Merc electronics and Command)
Sorry for being direct about it.. but you are on the AMG dark side of the forum.
I'm driving this thing on the streets of NYC and it is absolutely fine. Basically an S class in a drag that will kick butt!
people go bonkers over the 63 Wagon.....

I also drive in the City and find the ride acceptable but a little hard.

Sorry, this is all I could find. The one in the video above is cooler IMO

Well, I did some used car hunting and took a look at some 2016 E63 wagons. Exterior is fine, but I have a couple hangups on the interior. Don't really care for the controls that are pushing against the right bolster of the drivers seat and I really don't like the center dash. All those buttons looks like a '80s pushbutton phone fused to a dvd player. The main problem with the 2018/2019/2020 is the pricing. To swing this I'll have to pay off the C7 first. That'll be clear by March. So I'm thinking of ordering late fall/winter for a European delivery in April or May.

The dynamic seat controls may look like that but they don't press against the bolster and you never notice they are there. The dash is very usable and not as modern as the 213 but still very capable. Benefit of the 2016s is the ability to enable CarPlay. Best of all worlds IMO. Lots going for it, better sound and much less expensive. Seriously consider a CPO 16.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I thought you had an order in for a E450 Wagon? I wonder if it's possible to buy a E53 Wagon in Canada and bring it back to the States? That way you'd have something truly unique and like practically one of kind in the USA. I'm still very satisfied with my E450 Wagon with the exception of the Goodyear Eagles Sport tires put on the car from the factory, this tires ride rougher than I'd like and the car is going in for the 10K miles next week and I'm having them change out the tires for the Michelin Primacy 3 run flats which are a grand touring tire rather than a sport tire and ride much better with less road noise. I don't like a bad ride and a lot of road noise. My E450 Cabriolet has the Michelin Primacy 3 tires and rides practically as good as a S class and still handles pretty darn good.

No way on a E53 wagon. I'm in CA, USA and importing a vehicle is not really an option. It'd be cheaper to buy 2 E63s. I had a E450 on order with the Euro delivery. However we couldn't get an opening in our schedule until Sept which pushed us to 2020 models so the order was cancelled. Meanwhile I've been thinking about it and I really want the E63 and the E450 would just be a compromise. With the E450 every time I would drive it I would think, this is nice, but I wish I'd gotten the E63 instead.
The audio system in the E450/E63 is not up to what I want. I've already started to look into what it'll take to replace it with something more to my liking. Even if I were to get a 2016 I'd still be ready to go down that path.

I just placed an order for a 2020 build. Seemed like I'd be the first one on their build list. I want people's opinion, especially of those who have owned E classes, on the soft close door. I think they come as standard in Ss? But about about Es, is it just gonna become another weak, breakable part in the car down the road or it does really add daily pleasure to your driving? thanks

Double edged sword. The hinges are so smooth (which is where some of the complaints about weak stops comes from) that very little force is needed to close them, which also results in passengers lightly closing the doors getting out of the car, so it's nice to have it just pull them shut. On the other hand, my in-laws barely shut the doors when getting in, think they didn't shut all the way, and immediately try to open to slam them shut and I'm constantly having to go "uh, no...you don't...no need to...just let it shut" while they wrestle with the door handle trying to open the door to slam it while the soft-close action is in progress. My wife and I like it because you can just gently bring the door closed and the car takes care of the rest, so you're never slamming the doors shut. If they do "break" later down the road out of warranty the latches still work, you just have to slam them shut like you would a regular door.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I like the nice tight thunk vault sound of shutting the doors without the soft close doors. I had them on my AMG wagon and don't on my E450 wagon and I like it better without them.

It really is a personal preference thing. You CAN still just slam the doors if you want with soft-close. I'd recommend anyone on the fence see if a local dealer has a car with them so you can see for yourself.

TugboatBill, if it is any help, I went through some of the same dilemmas. The 63 is a total splurge that no one needs. I wanted a performance wagon, and the 450 would have been more than fine. By the time I added all I wanted, much I became glad was standard with the 63, i would have been thinking, for only a little more I could have had what I really wanted... the 63. Now that I have the 63, I don't regret it, and it exceeded my expectactions and does so daily. It is one tough, world class car. A sleeper to those that don't know, and a fantastic specimen for those that do.... oh, and it had me at the sound! Nothing like that V8 and tuning sound. 450 would have been fine though no doubt.

LOL, "a little more". That is my mantra. The E450 stickered out at $90K. Why so much? All those "a little more" decisions on options and there I was at $90K. Now it is "a little more" and I'm looking seriously at the E63. I keep telling myself I'll keep it near $120K. But deep down I know "a little more" will put me over 130.

Totally uunderstand and I justified the budget in many different ways. In the end, rather adding 15 things to the 450, I bought white, only added the safety systems, performance exhaust, and HUD to the 63... it is fine and I don't care about re-sale... I will probably keep it. I almost spent close to 70 on a 4 cyl Volvo but in the end feel the 63 was a better "value." for what I wanted. For the record a loaded V90 would have been fine also.. but not the same thing.. not even close.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I’m happy with my 70k e450. Plus if gas goes up to ten bucks a gallon and there is rationing I’ll be all set with the 21 gallon tank and 550 mile range. It gets about the same amount of attention as my Red amg wagon which isn’t much which is a good thing lol. I might try to get the car to the track tomorrow. I’m shooting for a 12.99 quarter mile

Admit it, you guys just like stopping at gas stations all the time to look at the pretty girls. lol. My main thing is I don't like stopping at gas stations so fuel economy to me is important as it gives a better range.

Pretty girls @ gas stations? That’s a new one.
Why don’t you own a Prius if gas mileage is so important? I believe they have a wagon version.

In case you haven't followed his posts, 2012 merc amg is disabled, uses a wheel chair, and drives with hand controls. Getting out and filling up frequently is a bit more of a chore for him than us able bodied folks.
