Why is it so difficult to get designo interior in AMG

First post here so please be patient with me. I've been trying to order a E63 wagon now for over 2 months.
The difficulty I'm having is I'm trying to order a saddle brown nappa designo leather with burl walnut trim.
The saddle brown is offered in the C63 but not in the E63, makes no sense. Same with the burl walnut.
The burl walnut is offered in the E 450 or whatever the lower end unit is and the machiatto/saddle brown is
also offered on the lower end vehicles but not on the top E class, how does this make sense. I've asked
a couple of dealers and the only way to get it is as a special order of more than $27,000. The interior I'm
looking for is on the same vehicle in a lower end model. Can someone explain to me why this is? Can't they
just ship the interior parts from the non AMG factory to the AMG factory and install the interior I'm looking for.
I'm thinking it's just a logistical issue, please shed some light on this if anyone has first hand experience.

There are so many examples like this to numerous to list across the entire line really. Sometimes it can change from one model year to the next as well. One year silver seat belts were allowed in designo platinum interior and the next year they weren't. You had to take black. I wrote to designo manufaktur about a similar issue and got no where. Just basic lip service and we're sorry blah blah. Wish I had better news. Try writing them here: designo@mbusa.com

The E63 is built at the same factory as the other E series. The engines come from the AMG plant, but I don’t believe the other parts do, so no need to ship as they’re already at the assembly plant.

I purchased my car through the factory delivery program, which includes a tour of the plant.

That said, they would have to build a special order to code the various machines to pull the right parts from wherever and have them sent to arrive at the assembly station as the car passes through.

If in fact the parts are the same as other E class, seems kind of pricey for someone to manually make some clicks to change the build config, but Mercedes know they have folks by the short hairs and probably aren’t worried about selling their full run at the already premium price over a normal E.

They also know there are plenty of people who won’t bat an eye at the extra cost, reasonable or not.

I would expect they come out with more Designo interior colors after the facelift. Same for paint, which is also obscenely priced to go off menu. If you can, wait for the 2020MY.

That has been a complaint that crosses all car lines. The inability of ordering interiors they way you want. It's just the way it is for cost sake. As you found out, you can go the custom route, but it will cost ya!
