Adding oil in between oil changes

I know coming from BMW land that boosted V8 German engines are known for "burning oil" during the time period in between oil changes.

I'm not sure if driving style is a factor in increased consumption or not, but let's just say that... my engine sees some mild abuse.

I got my last oil change at 10k miles. I'm at like 16k now.

I received a message that engine oil was low, telling me to put a quart in.

I put a quart in (5W-40 from Mercedes if anybody is wondering), then went to the Measure Engine Oil level menu. That screen (not the message) said to add 2 quarts after I had already put a quart in.

I put another quart in, and it *still* says to add 2 quarts... Any advice? I saw it say "Measuring engine oil level" when I refresh the screen/powercycled the car. What is a normal amount of oil to have to add in between oil changes?

I drove the car around a bit to see if the oil would heat up/expand and change the measurement level but I don't think it made much of a difference.

go fast grocery getter wagon
that would be a very strange notification.

adding 2 quarts may normally suggest you are at the "min" to start off and to reach the "max", that 2 quarts should be plenty enough, IMO.

For mine, I tend to add just 1 quart. The refreshed message would indicate my oil level would be 1 notch below "max" which I am okay with.

This is after adding 2 quarts. Would you add a third?

Mine didn't burn that much oil during the first 10,000 miles according to the display. After my first service it started a little lower than from the factory and seems to have held fairly constant since then, if only a tad lower. But then again I'm only at 11,800 miles now.

I'd be questioning the sensor or software at this point and schedule a visit with the dealer as I'd be worried about it being overfilled at this point.

I would not start this engine. Get the car transported to dealer or get a dip-stick to measure the oil level manually. Too much oil is bad.

how weird, i drove it around for an hour and now it is good

that means i burnt roughly 2 quarts of oil in 6k miles of hard driving? not bad i guess. that’s a 3-6 month window so... right in life with 0.5 - 1 quart a month?

IMO, that's excessive consumption for most modern engines and the e63 in particular. BMW would claim this was normal with their earlier engines which tended to burn a lot of oil but even their current engines generally don't burn that much anymore.

does it make a difference that I am almost always driving my car hard? full race mode, always shifting gears manually, lots of wide open throttle time? i'd say i use comfort mode 20% of the time.

i will note that, i had a '14 M5 (manual) and i burnt all of the oil out of that thing too :P

I’m sure that would consume a little more oil than “average” but the rate your engine is going, seems far greater than just hard driving. I’ve only had my oil changed once so far but it didn’t need any oil (consumption was not measurable via the electronic level). That was with a few autoX events and spirited driving here and there. I would’t say I flog my car every day though. However, you’re going on 3 to 4 quarts between oil change intervals, which is why I think it’s not normal.

i would agree with you, but I think the common theme here is: how accurate is this oil sensor thing?

i added oil at 9am EST today, and it took until 2pm to update...

I would keep an eye on and/or take it in to the dealer to check if the sensor is working properly. They can do a compression and leak down test. Who knows, might be a fluke thing where the dealer didn't quite fill the oil to the right level during the service or there's something wrong with the sensor.

So 1 qt in 3000 miles.

Chevy states that is OK I wonder what MB says is OK.
but that is limit less miles and they take a look at it.

Keep an eye on oil level for sure... or maybe drive in wimpy mode for 3000 miles to see if it burns less.

Dumb question but... do you know approximately where the sensor is located? I'm just asking for general knowledge/education.

If I had a leak... would I notice it visually/physically somewhere or could it be burning internally at an excessing rate without me noticing? I don't personally think I have a leak, but your advice is good nonetheless.

I'm not 100% sure but the sensor should be in the oil pan. If you had an external leak, you would eventually see drops of oil somewhere on the ground after the car is parked for a while. If you never see any external signs, the oil is most likely getting past the oil control ring on the piston/s or the getting past the valve seals and entering the combustion chamber where it vaporizes and gets burned. You may see a bluish exhaust smoke, especially on a cold start. All engines burn a little bit of oil and turbo charged engines like ours will burn a little more than an NA engine but IMO, you normally don't burn 4 quarts between service intervals.
