Anybody using a third-party rear seat screen?

I noticed there are third party options for rear seat screens which are “plug and play”. I assume this means they get power from the rear seat connector on the w213 like this android based unit one on aliexpress.

I’m assuming the only benefit of plugging into the predefined seatback holes is you get power and OEM-ish mounting, but the unit wouldn’t communicate with the MBUX canbus.

i also found some discussion on the GLE board but nobody seems to have actually pulled the trigger on these.

just checking in to see if anybody had positive or negative experiences. Seems easier to just strap a cheap tablet on the headrest.

Our kids usually use either their phones or the 12" iPad pros I have on longer trips.

These are halcyon days we live in: 600hp family cars with simple plug-n-play RSE systems. 13yr ago I paid $6k in my V70R to have AI Design install a headrest system made by third party vendor. I even bought a hide from the Scottish OEM supplier to make sure the leather was 100% matching. Now... a total waste of money. I would have done the normal seats if my kids weren't always on their phones...

Good luck! Your choices are pretty good it seems.

I should note that my kids are 16 and 18 now.

We have the built-in screens in each of the Honda Odyssey minivans we've had and they were great when the kids were toddlers. We could plop in their favorite movies and they'd watch them over and over and we could control them from the front seat. As they got older they had less and less desire to watch the movies or listen to the radio on the infrared headphones and their preference changed to streaming audio on their phones or watching youtube, netflix, or whatever.

I do have the unlimited data plan for the in-car WiFi hotspot, which is OK when it works. Seems that every now and then they have to switch over to using the phone or iPad's own data plan because the Verizon 4G/LTE hotspot in the car isn't connecting to the Internet.

Looking forward to 5G mmW which per claims by 5G proponents will cover every square inch of the earth with Gbit/s+ data speeds.

That was a joke by the way. I'm extraordinarily skeptical of the 5G coverage claims for the millimeter wave bands.
