Buying Specs From MB

Hi
Thoughts on the: DC2 Acoustic Comfort Package: Increased Cabin Insulation, Windshield, is it worth it, is there a notable difference in cabin noise?

Does anyone know if this spec can be installed by OEM if the car wasn't built with it?
Thanks.

No way it can be installed after build. The insulated glass is thicker, for instance, so the body has differences to be able to accept the glass.

I didn't get it on mine because the bulk of the noise on these cars comes from the tires, and is directly transmitted to the cabin. But I have never driven an E63 with it so I can't say what the difference is but I'm confident it would not be as significant as in a non-AMG 213. I figured the extra weight was not worth it.

My E550 had the option and my E63S does not. There is a significant reduction in the heat load due to the infra-red blocking membrane in the windows. The wind noise is also reduced. There is additional sound matting in the doors and under the rear floor to reduce road noise. However, the amount of noise from the tires on my E63S is transmitted to the cabin through the suspension, so I don't believe that the acoustic package will help in that regard.

I got the Acoustic Comfort package. I find the “heat absorbing membrane” does work somewhat in the Miami summer, but as the Pirelli tires wear on, they get really loud and the inside of the car is pretty raucous. It wasn’t like this when new. I am not sure I would get it again.

I have it on my wagon. Seems pretty quiet, but I've never driven one without it. Also, I have a weathertech cargo liner in the back, so I'm sure that helps with noise transmitted through the rear floor as well. I will be getting quieter tires when the time comes to replace my Michelins (prob the Bridgestone Potenza 980AS), so it should quiet down even more...

The right answer here seems to be: "it depends on the road surface"!

If I was driving on the Autobahn would definitely go for acoustic package.

If your local roads are not smooth as Autobahn, it's waste of money....

Acoustically, good for reducing noise not due to the tires on the road surface. Thermally, the reduction of heat load is significant, especially if you are located in the southern parts of the US. I wonder how much effort it would be to isolate the tire noise on the E63S. I had the package on my E550 and never experienced the magnitude of road noise as I've had on my E63S. I've had Pirelli's, Michelin's, and Bridgestone's on my vehicle. Only the Bridgestone's offered any sort of significant reduction in road noise.
