Is MBUX a hardware or software?

I have a 2019 E63S and I’ve just discovered some new voice commands like ‘set temp etc.’ or ‘set ambient light to etc.’.
i heard the mbux is even better and I’m wondering what I would need to upgrade. Is it a hardware component that I can’t have or is it software I can pay for?

I have both MBUX and COMAND. To me,, it is not worth spending money to upgrade to MBUX aside from the touchscreen.. I also do not know if it is even possible....

MBUX is both hardware and software. It's impossible to upgrade to it - mainly because the electrical architecture, sensors, modules, etc in the car have to be designed around it.

MBUX has some cool features such as augmented reality navigation and a far superior AI based voice assistant. It works similar to Siri and Google Assistant and listens to the "Hey Mercedes" trigger phrase. So you can say something like "Hey Mercedes, drive me to the airport" and it figures out the rest. Those things are cool, but some other areas are a step back from the latest COMAND. I'm not a fan of the UI as it is designed for touch, so operating it with the physical controls is cumbersome. Also CarPlay and Android Auto are not full screen, which is one of the biggest complaints. I've had a few loaners with MBUX and I didn't care for it as much as I thought. I'm kinda happy my '19 C63S didn't get it.

As correctly mentioned above, it's hardware and software and it requires an entire new electrical architecture. This is why some facelift models didn't get it. The W213's electrical architecture was upgraded with the facelift.
