Tires Make a BIG Difference

So, I have a 2021 E63, and have been enjoying every moment of driving this glorious machine. However, the stock Michelin tires were annoying me a little. They're a bit noisy and stiff.

Then one day I had to drive on wet pavement. While the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4Sare phenomenal on dry pavement but virtually useless on wet. I was slipping all over the place. Then I got a huge nail in the front tire. Which was repaired, but the repair did not hold. So I was going to have to buy a new tire.

I decided to swap off the stock tires to the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. I did this on my previous CLS and was totally satisfied with them.

Wow. What a difference.

Unsurprisingly, I lost some dry pavement handling with the all season tires. That was a bummer, but it is not that noticeable. I don't drive that aggressively. However, the all seasons are significantly quieter and smoother.

I just completed a 600 mile road trip on these new tires and the car was a wonderful cruiser, but still able to get raucous when necessary.

that exactly the sentiment I have. The AS 4 may have about 75-80% of the 4S dry traction but the ride overall is not as harsh, IMO.

I'm also going to swap to All Seasons before winter. Trying to get some info from Bridgestone on their new RE980AS+, which is supposedly replacing the RE980AS in terms of improvements made. Otherwise I may go with the Conti DWS 06 Plus...

I'm installing the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4 this Friday on my wagon. They didn't test as high in dry traction compared to the DW06, but aced it in wet traction and light snow. I'll report back after installation. Thanks for your review.

The rubber compound has been modified to work better at low temperatures AFAIK.

Well that would seem to be news to Bridgestone customer service! I just got off a chat with them, and they claim the only difference between the two is that the "+" model is an OE tire which does not come with a mileage warranty. Other than that, they claim no differences. I don't buy it...especially as the older 980AS is supposedly on closeout at TireRack. I'm guessing the 980AS is being phased out.

"Compared to the Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS it replaces, the new Potenza RE980AS+ shares the same performance-tuned tread design, featuring a new, updated compound developed to increase light-snow traction.

The Potenza RE980AS+ molds the updated all-season compound into an asymmetric, noise-optimized tread pattern to balance dry and wet performance with quiet comfort. The tire's lateral slots are chamfered to improve rubber-to-road contact and aid in dry braking, while the 3D full-depth sipes interlock for tread stability. High sipe density creates the biting edges for traction in slippery conditions, and their full depth helps maintain performance over time. The Potenza RE980AS+'s tread pattern slots and grooves are interconnected to facilitate water evacuation from the contact patch, and open shoulder slots combine with high levels of see-through void to further reduce the risk of hydroplaning".

Ha, you would think their customer service had this info at their fingertips! I just got another chat with a different rep, and she stated as you did, and that the 980AS+ is replacing the 980AS. Supposedly it has better treadwear as well.
