BEWARE WHEN ON DYNO

Hi all,

there seems to be very little information regarding a topic that is very susceptible. Transfer case malfunction from dyne runs.

Recently I took my 2017 E63s to a shop to dyno run it and see what power its pulling out. after 3 or 4 runs with the car not wanting to stay on the dyne I start to smell a foul burning odour coming from my car.

turns out the tuner did not disengage the front wheels properly. WHEN PLACING A CAR INTO DYNO MODE you must make sure the front wheels are disengaged otherwise you will burn your transfer case and up for a world of hurt.

before I replaced the transfer case I would be able to drive the car for about 10 mins under full load and it would still have all 4 wheels engaged before throwing a 4-matic inoperative message, no problems at all with driveline and power delivery.

F-Fwd to now.

I m having two issues that im hoping you fine people can assist me with,

after changing the transfer case im experiencing the following,

Vibration in pedal feels like diff is not allowing back right wheel to unleash full power under full throttle load (prominent in 4th gear)

Drivetrain clunk when shifting from drive to neutral which is suspected that the tail shaft is holding torque.

ive completed a transferase and rear diff oil change cant think of anything else it might be.

if you are reading this and have a spare minute to assist me, it would be greatly appreciated.

This doesn't make sense, I've seen W213s on AWD Dynos before without issues.

Keyword AWD dyno. Sounds like OP had the car on a 2WD dyno, if so run away fast from that tuner who doesn't know what they are doing. Who knows what else got busted in the powertrain.

yikes, sounds like a disaster. i would imagine there is more than just the transfer case that experienced stress and overheating. hard to say exactly what could be damaged though.

UPDATE: I have had the transfer case replaced. fixed the 4matic issue. only thing im experiencing is under full load I sometimes feel the power is being cut from wheels, alongside a little bit of vibration coming from the gas pedal... not sure if anyone here has changed over their transfer case to weigh in on this experience but geez its been an expensive experience let me tell you.

have you checked out if your front diff needs servicing? is the 4matic inoperative message on all the time or does it go away after driving for a bit?

Those that are fans of tuning tend to dismiss the risks, but as you have found when something breaks it comes out of your pocket, not theirs.

Sounds like this shop didn't have experience with W213 E63s and failed to properly engage dyno mode/RWD mode.

Equally important to vet the tuner and the shop you're working with to make sure you can avoid this costly mistake.

when esp on and car full load, I will feel the power cut off, if set esp to sport mode it will be better. Not sure if my transfer case is damaged

Firstly I am really sorry for your issue mate, but it sounds like the group you took your car to did not really understand what they were doing and not professional.

Secondly, you need to make them pay for their mistake not yours. You mistake would be taking it to them initially yet…whose to know hey. Hard to find either good mechanics or good places to dyno anything.

I’ve had issues with Japanese dyno w@nkers here with a previous car that was fairly modified, so I feel your pain my dude. 👍😎
