Exclamation Large chunks missing from carbon ceramic brake rotors!?!

Hello all,

I just discovered large chunks missing from / gouges in my rear carbon ceramic brake (CCB) rotors. 2018 E63s, 49,500 miles, OEM rotors & brake system, never been tracked. Great majority of the miles are cruising on the freeway. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any advice on how I should proceed?

Thanks,
Jeremy

It looks like impact damage from when the rear tires were changed. No recourse except to replace the rotors and pads ASAP.

Sorry to hear that, check your fronts too and replace them asap.

It looks like impact damage and that's why I always make it clear to the dealership or who ever is servicing the car to watch out and not damamge them. Replacing them rotors/pads not going to be cheap, fairly expensive ($$$$)

Who did your last wheel/tire rotation? This is how I do mine. CCB's are great but pain to look after

Before mounting the wheels back

using the guide pins and rags, cover the rotors and mount the wheels/tires

Once mounted, grab the rags and pull them out

I've never seen surface crazing on a brake rotor as appears in the first photo. Looks like a manufacturing defect. Any warranty?

If you don't want to spend on CCB there is always Giro disc conversion to Iron

If you are in warranty doesn't hurt to take it in and see what they say. There are cars here on mbworld that have had them replaced.

Carbon ceramic rotors fail catastrophically. Do not drive any farther than necessary and replace this immediately. This is an extremely unsafe situation. Inspect all of your rotors, as even a small chip or dent will cause structural failure if you have any heat buildup.

Hi all,

I took the wheels off and inspected the brake rotors more thoroughly. The fronts are fine. The left rear only has the chunk missing that I showed in my original post - on the outer face. The right rear, however, has one chunk missing on the outer face and two more on the inner face.

Has anyone seen this before? I've searched for similar problems and not found anything. I'd really like to know if this is a known issue. I'm out of warranty, but if it's a manufacturing defect, possibly Mercedes would be willing to do something. I'm going to take it to my dealer and see what they say.

Some people suggested impacts as the cause. I change my own wheels - one set with winter tires, another with summer - and I know that I didn't hit the rotors. I also find it difficult to imagine how an impact sufficient to cause this damage could occur on the inner face of the rotor without doing anything to the dust shield - the dust shield looks perfect.

Thanks for all the advice & please let me know if anyone has seen this before. If anyone knows of good specialist AMG shops that I might call and ask about this, I'd be grateful for recommendations. I do know this is a very dangerous condition and I am getting the rotors and pads replaced ASAP. I'd appreciate advice on where to get a decent price on replacement CCB rotors too!

Thanks,
Jeremy

The other possibility is road debris. Road gravel hitting the rotors during the winter. There have been other posts about the dangers of using CCBs during winter road conditions due to rocks and sand.

Have the pads ever been replaced in the rear? Any other work in the rear where both tires or calipers came off. Any way someone was dumb enough to try the spread the pads with a screwdriver leveraging against the rotor. Could explain why it’s in the middle and on both sides?

your wheels stay clean longer though and if properly maintained they last longer.

This guy got his replaced in warranty:

It's a crap shoot IMHO. I know my dealer would somehow try and make it work for me as we have a good relationship. But Mercedes as a corporate entity? Good luck, they are *******s.

With the right pads and FCP Euro rotors (lifetime replacement) you get clean wheels and though the rotors don't last as long you get free replacements.

Sadly FCPEuro doesn't quite ship to Canada.

Yes, they give you a US shipping address and then forward the package to your actual address.

also fcpeuro change their lifetime warranty.

So you buy the first set....
It wears out and you need next set
you have to buy second set.
Return first set.
You get store credit based on first set price.
Sit on this store credit
Time for another set
order new set and use that credit to pay a portion of bill (Will not cover taxes nor shipping if they charge you shiping.
Return first set.
You get store credit based on first set price.
Sit on this store credit

which means you have to buy 2 sets complete and sit on credit until replacement which is fine for brakes if you keep car forever. if not you may end up with store credit you never use again....
so you end up buying something you did not need to burn up the credit.

I mean it is nice but kinda lost the LIFETIME WARRANTY feel to me.
I think Pelican does same and well to me if I find prts cheaper somewhere else I am just going that way.
No sense to pay for this anymore.

Think about it you use it for a sensor on your car.
The one they send you ends up lasting for as long as you own car and you end up buying a HONDA net.
What ya going to do with this credit

Sorry for side bar - this change sucks is all and I doubt many realize it happened.
