New CLS 63 AMG due on the 17th
Hi guys,
I traded in my Aston Martin DB9 for a car I have never driven! A new CLS 63 AMG. I can't wait!
My dealer did not have any in group stock; and I test drove the only AMG vehicle they had a new C63 and to be honest I was a little underwhelmed. Thinking about it; its not that I was underwhelmed; more that I had got so use to how amazing the DB9 was; as it was my daily driver and that car did so many things right. So the C63 was not right for me.
I saw the CLS63 AMG and felt that could be a whole new deal. Performance, looks, exclusivity, comfort, gadgets and dare I say it but some decent fuel economy thrown into the mix. I was averaging 12mpg (UK gallons) in the DB9.
Anyway I can't wait (Driving ML350CDI until she arrives) and wanted to get feedback from you all about how to best look after the CLS63 straight out the box. Specifically protecting the paint/glass/wheels, running in etc. I paid for this Star guard protection from the dealer on the ML and to be honest did not seem to notice what it actually did and it cost close to £500!
Would love to hear from anyone about their own experiences. Cheers

Comparing a DB9 to a C63 is like comparing a Vantage 8 to a SLS....
For power, design and comfort the 2012 CLS63 is the best car on the market.
And after you get it tuned...one of the fastest....

Yeah I totally get what you are saying. It was just a bad judgment call by the salesman trying to get me into a C63, and not really understanding my needs. Thats all good; as I really thought this through and knew the CLS 63 AMG would be right once I had done some research.
Talking about Tunes; I have read a lot of great stuff here on the Renntech; Do you know anything about Brabus, Kleeman or any other tunes worth considering? Just want to make an informed decision when the time is right. Cheers

I'm not selling them, but he did my tune, my slip differential,my transmission, inner cooler, and my down pipes. I can't imagion anyone ever touching my car but renntech.
But do your own research and this board will give you several opinions about the company they use and why.
Good luck and when you get your car, remember don't let your wife know about the C setting or she will make you keep it on that setting when she is with you :-)

Got my Renntech tune last week and my ears are now further back on my head because of it....
My only issue now is learning to get the most out of the power without wheel spin. Once I kill the continentals I'm gonna go to semi-slicks...

Congrats on your new car. Possibly a drop in road feel from your DB9 but more comfort for sure. Which colour is it? Which options? BTW, I don't think Kleemann is doing ecu tunes for the 63TT yet, only the 63 Naturally Aspirated. The most popular here seem to be Renntech and OE for the 63TT.

Thanks for your reply Mr Happy. Yeah instant thing for me was road feel when i tried the C63 AMG. Fast as hell though; like being slapped with silk gloved hand. The DB9 had a gorgeous 6L V12 that certainly didn't lack torque; but in comparison i noticed above 100mph the C63 had more linear pull (through the speedo) but did not feel as fast as it actually was. I think with the M157 its going to be on another plane.
The car I ordered is Tenorite grey with the forged wheels and black leather interior, driver package, dynamic contour seats, sunroof, and Harmon Kardon sound system. I did not order the PP as in the UK its a $10 grand option! effectively for a remap. The relative gains in power and torque just seemed like poor value. I could see for example BMW were pulling 560HP out of a 4.4 V8 TT in the M5, so I knew that the mighty Merc marketing machine were reigning in those horses with the AMG 5.5L V8 TT. Now that's where Renntech et al come in. To allow the M157 to perform to its more natural potential.

Everyone is correct the tune is going to make a big difference. We tune quite a few of the newer BMW V8 TT and so far the M157 seems to have more potential but we will see when we get our M5 stateside!

Cheers greenwillie. My local dealer had a specable unit for delivery mid April. I went ahead with the purchase around the 10th of Feb. So the wait was pretty good (these cars are very rare here in the UK). Lucky I was in that situation. However for that delivery i could not spec any designo paint/leather which was not a problem really for me. Everything else was fine.
LSD wise, well I'm of the opinion that Merc would not release such a car without LSD if it made the car un-driveable/uncontrollable. We have relatively small roads compared to the states and the idea of driving with the back end hanging out everywhere just would not be possible. My last drive was the DB9, and i would drive that too fast for sure but not in a maniacal sense, and prior to that was the Ferrari F430 Spider. Both of which I drove fast but rarely with the a**e all over the show.
I don't have time to track either (but I think I will try with this one and make time!) so just did not seem to make financial sense. Also here in the UK prices are a little different. LSD is $5000, PP $10000, carbon brakes $16000. My car specced as it is $144000 equivalent. I won't be keeping the car beyond 2 to 3 years and a lot of those options would add very little to resale value.
How about you can you not call around your dealers and see if an allocation is still specable?

I'm in a small market and my dealer has nothing in stock and one coming that is sold. It seems other dealers are not wanting to transfer their current cls63's to them. I would prefer to buy from my local dealer. There's one car that's a maybe transfer but does not have LSD. I'll never track the car but seems everyone on this board advises LSD as almost mandatory?? I'm looking at ordering but will not have the patience to wait.., also if I order at this late date might as well get a 2013. so here I am, stuck...suggestions?

thats too bad. One of the factors for me was having a local dealer for issues; with the Aston and Fezza it was an hours drive to the dealer; and for little things I was letting things slide.
I have never driven the CLS 63 AMG. However the Aston Martin DB9 is a great handling car - No LSD. The Ferrari F430 Spider had an electronic diff. Not a mechanical diff. I just think that unless its bragging rights or that you just want to master drifting on the open roads; I can't see the need (apart from maybe very slippy conditions such as when snow/ice). So I guess its just what you want to spend your money on. However the proof will be in the pudding as they say.

Thanks Blackpool,
Won't be long until your new baby arrives. Enjoy! I just don't know enough about the pro's and cons of the LSD so I just deferred to the opinions on the board. Almost all said to get LSD. I'll add your input to the mix. If It's really not that big of a deal day in and day out, I'd love to pass on it and get a car sooner rather than later. Just don't want to make a major mistake as I'll own this car for about three years.
