'99 E320 Question About Upgrading Wheels and Tires
Hello Luke,
I have a '99 E320 4Matic with OEM everything. For the sake of appearance and performance (in that order), I would like to get a set of AMG Aero II Monoblock rims (a nice conservative/sporty look IMHO) and I believe you're going to recommend the Dunlop Sport 5000s (based on your great FAQs). Here's the parameters I'm working with:
1) I live in Seattle so I deal with 50% rain and a little snow
2) Since my car is AWD, I'd rather not adversly affect its traction control
3) I like a sporty ride, but don't want to jolt the car apart or loose my wife
4) I'm not willing to change my tires from season to season
So here are my questions:
1) I personally really like the look of the E55 wheels/tires (staggered Aero II 18" Monoblocks), am I getting over my head?
2) If so, what wheel/tire sizes would you recommend? 7.5Jx17" & 235-45/17?
3) Tire model: Dunlop Sport 5000s? I not familiar with Dunlop, but I've had good luck with Michelins.
4) Eventhough it hasn't been an issue in 8+ years, can I still use chains with any of these upgrade options?
5) Do I need to replace my spare as well?
6) When I purchase tires/wheels through Tire Rack, can you send them directly to an installation location or do I have to receive them?
Thanks!
Otto

I just did a plus-1 upgrade to my 2004 CLK320 and I chose Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S. Tire sizes: F:225-45-17; R:245-40-17
So far after 2K to 3K KM, I'm very impressed with the tires. The ride is firm but not harsh. The tread wear is supposed to be excellent. You should definitely put it in your short list.
