i've heard running different sizes will mess up your transmission. my problem is that i'm running 235/40/18 all around right now and i have 80% tread left on my tires. i want to save money and just change the front to 225/40/18 so i can lower my car. is this ok, or should i change all four tires?

I believe your current tire is the incorrect size. Who recommended a 235/40/18 on a W203 C320? That size is too tall. The OEM tire of 205/55/16 is 24.9" tall and that 235/40/18 is 25.4". That size is ok on a W210 E-Class.
You should be running:
225/40/18 front or all
255/35/18 rear only
Incorrect tire size do not 'mess up' the transmission causing need for repair it only gives you an incorrect speed measurement from your speedometer and your actual speed.
To 'properly' lower the car you change the springs.
