How far can you strech a tire (what goes on 17X8?)

So, if I have 235/45 17s on my car, and I have 17X8 wheels on there, what are my options for new tires?

I'm trying to figure out the ratios, but I'm not quite sure what I can go up to - or down to.

Is there a rule like stay between 235/45 and XXX/XX?

Thanks!

You don't have much room to play. About the only "+0" fitment (going wider and lower profile on the same wheel) option is 245/40-17:

And that would throw your speedometer off by 2.4%, which is probably not enough to cause problems with ABS etc.

Good to know for a second opinion, thanks. I found this tool which was useful

I tried to keep the sizes the same and I think I will try to go with a 235/40 and see how that works. Do you think that little change will have that much of an affect on driving conditions?

I figure...

Good
Lower sideall=lower C of Gravity (better handling though)

bad
Less rubber=more noise and less cushioning from the road

Frankly, if it were me I'd stick with the stock. The proper +0 would be 265/40-17 (same diameter tire) but that would need an 8 1/2" wide wheel. The slight change is too much of a compromise to be worth the possible side effects of confusing your electronics. Imagine how annoying it would be to start throwing transmission codes.

A real +1 upgrade to 18" wheels, lower profile, more width would make a very noticeable improvement in handling. You're probably not going to see any improvement from the slight change you're proposing so why ask for trouble? Wait until you can do it right.

So I should just quit with all this crazyness and stick with 235/45 ?

That does sound like the easiest soution
