Removing spring from front strut
I have bought the H&R lowering spring from tirerack. I have installed the rear spring myself, and am looking to do the front myself.
I took out the whole strut/spring unit yesterday and i could not figure out how to remove the top of the assembly that holds the top of the spring to the strut. when i put a 7mm wrench in the socket at the top of the strut to turn it the entire strut turns and i am back to square 1.
anyone know how to remove a spring from a front strut on a w209? i have all the tools, spring compressors.,... ect.
You have to put it in a strut compressor and compress it all the way down. In the inside/middle of the top bearing (big black rubber piece) there is something that threads over the threaded end of the stut that appears to be a washer with a notch/nipple on each side. There is a tool you are supposed to use for this- but I didn't have one. Once the pressure is off the top hat- you should be able to lightly tap it around with a flat screw driver to unscrew it. Once that's unscrewed it should come appart easily.
If you don't have the correct tools- take them to a suspension shop and have them swap them out for you. Should take no more than a 1/2 hour for the pair.
