Opinions on Sumitomo HTR

Looking for a well-rounded (no pun intended) all-season tire. (in a 235/45/17 size). The Sumitomo HTR+ has gotten decent reviews on tirerack, but at half the price of Michelins, is there a catch?

C230 2.3 Manual Coupe
I bought the 225 40 18 and have had it for two weeks. However I've been driving a different car and literally haven't driven it other than my driveway and garage since I installed it.

What got me interested in it is the high tread wear. I guess it's not built for hard core racing but then again it's not like I'll be running laps in a track.

I don't know much about the HTR's, but you should also read up on the Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR. Excellent performance/price ratio A/A/300.

Thanks, but they must be all-season. That cuts down on the number of choices considerably.

A lot of folks with VW Passats have gone with the HTR+'s, and really like them. Check out the forums on www.clubb5.com and do a search in the Wheel & Tire Forum -- there's a guy named crew217 that did a pretty decent review on them. IIRC, he said that they're fairly quiet and have great grip, but that turn-in was a little on the slow side, but it was a good compromise given that it was an a/s tire.

I'm planning on getting these for my mom's E430 when she needs new tires, and I will get them for myself as well if I don't go with a dedicated summer tire/winter tire setup for my car.

Good stuff! Thanks for the link. I think I'll be going with these next. I'll miss the tread pattern of the 3-season ones, but if these are quiet, that'll make up for it.

I've got HTR II's on my CLK430 and my SLK230, both car handles great and with minimal road noise.

I think it is the best tire for the price.
