TPMS threads worn on 'new' ML320
The TPMS sensors are two-part; metal stem and sensor. Installer showed me one stem that had outside threads worn smooth and advised that none of the stem-sensor combinations would hold air as the 'rubber' gaskets were brittle.
I have 8k miles on the rig so took sensors to MB dealer. They advised the units had been damaged by the installer - no warrantee coverage.
Anyone else encounter this problem (worn threads)/have any idea how that might occur? I've seen a stem support that installs to support the stem against the rim - about US$5 each, but the part description suggests its for supporting stem while driving at very high speeds.
Can I order after-market stem and sensors without ordering wheels and tires?
Thanks

Would that explain why the threads were smooth (gone) only within a narrow (about 1/8 inch) area perpendicular to the threads? To my non-mechanical eye, it looks like it was rubbing on something for awhile.
I'm not looking to blame anyone - just wondering if, when the new ones are installed, I might have something going on that might damage them as well.
