tire wear

My tires with a little over 20,000 mi are chopped on the inside right front and rear. tire dealer says its because of bad shocks not bad tires. tires were rotated at 10,000 mi twice.suggests changing rear shocks. I find that confusing. car is an e320-2002 with low profile tires.
ever since new tires(coopers) were put on I've had annoying road noise.
Is it possible that the car needs shocks and why just rear? I have no pulling or bumpy ride so am not sure why they think it's shocks. Any input would be appreciated.

Six year old shocks could very well require replacement. Have you done the bounce test? Get the rear of your car bouncing up and down (while parked - use your hands). When the motion is good, let go. The rear should come to rest in about 2 - 3 bounces. An old way to check.
