Driving summer performace tires in winter.

I have Potenza Re760s on my CLK and several people have told me to not drive in the snow and ice. Not that I would but can they be safely driven in just cold temps without snow or ice?

Let me rephrase, can these kinds of tires be driven safely in cold temps without snow or ice?

I don't think I would recommend it, even dried salt on roads gets slippery, and the high performance tires get pretty hard below 40 degrees.
