RE050 and RE050 "pole position"

I noticed that in the 275/35/19 size, there is a difference in physical size between the pole position and the standard RE050. The pole positions are narrower by an inch in thread width. Is this a common occurrence or is it just this size. Are they manufactured at different plants? I was caught off guard and didn't check the specs on the same tire I was replacing, aside from the "pole position" designation. The 275 pole position is closer in size to a 255. Why would they do that?

I have a traction problem at any speed below 50 mph. A narrower tire than I have on there right now will most likely make it worse.
