Sumitomo tires on R129 (SL500 Sport)
I bought an '01 R129 (SL500 Sport) recently. It came with what appear to be a new or nearly new set of Sumitomo HRG III tires in the correct sizes for the staggered wheels that are standard on the Sport package. I put the recommended 33/36 pounds of air F/R. I realize the combination of aspect ratio, tire pressure, and roadster suspension all conspire together, but the ride seems pretty stiff. I expect the car to ride differently from my '04 W220 (S 430) on Michelin MXV Primacys, but the cowl shake and general teeth chattering are a little much.
I don't expect the Sumitomos will last too long. In anticipation of buying replacement tires, is there another tire that will be softer riding but still stick? I'm a firm believer in the Michelins for sedans, but my experience with high performance tires is limited.
Advice please? I drive the car moderately hard and make it work for its dinner.
