wider tyres bigger tyres more fuel?
My original tyres were 205/55R16 and I just changed them
to 225/40ZR18 for front and 255/35ZR18 for rear.
I notice a big increase in fuel consumption. Is that normal?

depends on the weather
most likely your added fuel consumption comes from a couple of areas
#1.) heavy wheels = additional unsprung weight = more power consumption = more fuel usage
#2.) your car now handes much better so you drive more aggessively and use your right foot more
