CLK320 - wheels reccommendation?

I have a black 99 CLK320 with OEM rims (quite ugly). I want to change them and was looking at the AMG 5-spoke thin ones.
If I go 18' do I need to change my suspension, brakes or anything else? I've read some posts where people say they driving/handling seemed weird after going to 18', should I just go with the 17' inch ones?

Also what do you all think about the AMG replica's any experiences (good/bad)?

thanks, Tony.

It depends on your budget. If you want to improve performance as well as handling, then you should get 18" wheels & tires, springs and shocks. But if you just want to improve the look, getting a set of wheels with lowering springs will be good enough. Getting AMG 17s" will give you the same ride comfort, however, I dont think going to 18" will affect the ride that much. Handling will not be weird, it will only be better. Changing brakes is not necessary unless you really want to spend $3000+ and show off your Brembos. Your car is not super fast afterall. Stock brakes are good enough to handle any stoppage.

If you can convince yourself to use replicas, there is nothing wrong with them. But if you think you will feel uneasy, then its another story.

Good luck!!

^^^ Good advice. If you decide to get replicas, find out as much about the company as you can. You do not want quality to be an issue. Find out how durable the replicas are and if there are any complaints about them.

thanks for the responses, they are very helpful. I am primarily concerned about looks, which is why I am thinking of doing 17', since I don't really want to lower the car and/or change brakes.
As for replicas I read in another post somebody's replicas finish was holding a whole lot better than the genuine AMG's.

Going from 16" to 17" wheels WILL change the ride 'comfort', just not as much as going to 18". You will hear more road noise and feel more bumps and feel every road irregularities. You also increase the chance of bending wheels with every increase of wheel size. Their are drawbacks and pluses to upgrading wheels.

I sutter each time I drive my car on city streets with 18" wheels. I also bent two 17" wheels, one was unrepairable on a pot hole. Good Luck.

Used to be a CLK430
I have a CLK430, stock with 17"s, IMO you should go with 18"s, the look is worth the ride quality.
