Michelin tires for a 2008 C300 sport

I'm driving a Mercedes 2008 C300 Sport and will need to replace my rear tires pretty soon. Based on the wear bars, I've probably got another month or two. The front tires still have a fair amount of tread.

I'm comparing the Pilot Sport A/S Plus and the Pilot HX MXM4(which are the same as the original equipment tires) would like to get the quietest most comfortable ride possible. Between these two (and any others you might want to recommend) which would likely fit my preferences. I almost never drive in snow (in Alabama) but would at least want the snow handling of the HX MXM4s as they did well in the little I've been in.

Also, since my rear tires are getting close to the wear bars and my front tires have plenty of tread on them, is there a problem with putting the Pilot Sport A/S Plus on the rear axle while keeping the HX MXM4s on the front?. They're different sizes and weren't rotatable.

If I stay with the HX MXM4s, do I need to replace all 4 at the same time or can I just put the two rear ones on now and later do the fronts as needed.

JimPap -- can you update us on what you chose in the end? I have replaced the OEM Contis with AS+ Michelins, and while the handling is indeed improved a bit, I am very much regretting my decision as the AS+ are both significantly noisier and harsher than the Contis.

I am considering swapping the AS/+ for Contis or HX MXM4. Thoughts?

I wound up staying with the Pilot HX MXM4s.

Since my front tires still had plenty of tread, I only purchased two for the rears.

Thanks for the reply! Could you comment on your tires re: noise levels on different road surfaces, handling in the rain, and in the snow?

Let me know if you've had a chance to compare with loaners shod with different tires.

The only loaners that I've driven have been newer models that have had obvious tweaks to their suspension.

In my area, southeastern U.S., we almost never get snow.

I do find these tires to be particularly sensitive to air pressure. At a certain pressure, they drive great. Higher and they're too firm and noisier.

We've had a lot of new re asphalting of some of the main roads around here. On those, the car is unusually quiet and smooth. On more of a worn surface where the surface is weathered, I'd say these tires are louder than others that I'm familiar with.

That's interesting -- your words describe my exact experience with the Pilot Sport AS+ : on good roads, the tires are pleasantly quiet, but on concrete and on rougher roads (plenty of those in town), they are noticeably noisier than the ContiProContacts with which I had prior experience.

I'll experiment a bit with tire pressure before turning in the tires. Cheers!

I typically drive in this car by myself...in other words, minimum weight. Trunk is empty too.

Air (nitrogen)pressure aim point is 27.5/31.5.

However, to get it right I find that I have to drive the car 4 or 5 miles (to the grocery store and back) and then park it in the garage for 3 hours before adjusting tire pressure. Around here, we have such temperature swings that doing it first thing in the morning after a cool night doesn't really work. Its not unusual to have a 40 degree swing in temperatures then add about another 20 degrees for road/tire heat and the cold temp measurement with the car sitting overnight doesn't work.
