Luke: 285/25/20 tire on 9.5" rim?

All of the 285/25/20 tires listed at Tirerack.com show a minimum rim width range of 10", yet I read and hear from a variety of sources that using this size tire on a 9.5" wide rim is no problem.

Is it safe to use a rim narrower than the design specification of the tire manufacturer? Which brand tires are safest to use when the rim width is less than specified by the tire manufacturer?

depends on the weather
while it is not something the tire companies recommend they have been know wo do it in the past with no issues

here's a couple of examples

1995 BMW M3
OE wheel was 17x7.5
OE tire size was 235/40-17
specified Rim Width Range...... 8.00 to 9.50

2005 Porsche GT2
OE rear wheel is 18x12
OE tire size is 315/30-18
Specified Rim Width Range...... 10.50 to 11.50
