How to prevent in the first place?
Is there anything you can put on it? I have a small dot starting on one, which has stayed the same size for two years.

There is a line of wheel acid/cleaner that I use on some cars to get the wheels clean. This also works great on the brakes to get some rust off. It is safe for the wheels/brakes if you dont leave it one there for a long time. It is manufactured through Car brite.
