A 255 front will fit the new E55 with no problems, along with the 285 rear. The only issue would be the offsets used on the SL wheels.
Brabus has a 255/285 on 19" wheel option for the W211.
I have fitted 275's to the rear of my E55 already and there is plenty of room to go up another size, however this is the widest tyre you can fit to a 9"rim. The same applies with regards 255's on the front.

the SL wheels are 18x8.5 and 18x9.5. So we have two that say no, and one that says yes. Come on fellas, can we reach a definitive answer so I can buy these rims/tires with no apprehension.

The tyres sizes will fit the car no problems. It is the offset of the SL rims that could be a problem.
I have just checked the correct offset for this combo on an E55 should be 30 frt and 31 rear.
The offset of the SL55 rim is 30 frt and 33 rear. (check amg web site), so there should be no problems with this combination at all. If the E500 doesn't have factory rolled guards, you will need that done.
