Staggered setup....why?

Stupid question but why exactly do we do this?My past 3 cars including my current E I have had the wider rear rims, and always thought it looked better but is there a handling or performance gain?I would think its more stable but would like to hear what you guys think......

for a rwd car, a wider tire in the back means you have more tire to put your horsepower to the ground, but you'll also get understeer if your back tires are too much wider than your fronts

depends on the weather
the main reason is to reduce throttle induced oversteer which inturn createes some understeer which makes the car safer for the average driver

Personally, I think it is because those fat lips in the back look soooooo cool. But, maybe Luke is correct it could be an understeer/oversteer thing.

1996 C36 AMG, 1995 Volvo 850 Turbowagon
the first e36 m3 had 17x7.5 all 'round...then switched to the same staggered setup as the c36, at 17x7.5 front and 17x8.5 rear

almost correct

the 1995 E36 M3 had 17x8 and 235/40-17 on all four corners

and after that in order to induce some understeer they changed to:

17x7.5 w/225/45-17 in the front

17x8.5 w/245/40-17 in the rear
