14mm vs 12mm lugs wheels

I know AMG has delicated wheels for W211 application only because its using 14mm lugs. But what about others like Brabus, Carlsson or Lorinser, etc?

I was told by a local tire shop that these aftermarket wheels are defaulted to take 14mm lugs already. Is this true?

If the above is real, doesnft it also means these aftermarket wheels wonft fit those Merc that are using 12mm lugs properly, right?

This is strange! And I am confused.

Some aftermarket wheels are drilled with a 14.5mm hole, so they can fit both 12mm and 14mm lugs. Although this isn't ideal, it does work. This is because the seat is a cone seat. Usually one finds a ball seat on OEM Mercedes wheels, AMG, and most "tuner" wheels (although the Carlsson x/6 series is a notable exception, as are some Lorinser wheels).

The problem with fitting 14mm v. 12mm ball seat wheels is two-fold. Normally, 12mm ball seat wheels have a 12.5mm hole and a 12mm radius ball seat. Thus, a 14mm lug won't fit through the hole. A 14mm ball seat wheel has a 14.5mm hole, and a 14mm radius ball seat. A 12mm lug will grip very little of the seat, and also the two different radius surfaces will not meet. That means very little material is left being held by the bolt, and it is possible that the dynamic forces acting upon the wheel could pull the material through.

With a cone seat, the angles of the cone seat are the same no matter what size the hole is drilled: 12.5mm, 14.5mm, 13mm (for American cars), 15mm, etc. However, a similar problem can occur where not much of the lug contacts not much of the wheel, and that point of the wheel could be overstressed. I have O-Z Racing wheels with a cone seat, and they were made as a specific fitment for Mercedes (hubcentric without rings), so the lug holes are very tight around a 12mm lug and I definitely trust the strength of this attachment. A 14mm lug will not even go in the hole on this wheel.

So, the best situation is a proper size ball seat for a proper size lug. The next best is proper size cone seats. And with careful consideration and checking of the cone seat lugs against the wheel, a 12mm cone seat lug can be used with a wheel with a cone seat drilled for 14mm lugs.

In my reply, please find your answer in the last sentence of the first paragraph. If it's not clear, please let me know and I will edit it!

If AMG wheels are also adopting ball seats, that is to say everybody can use W211 wheels now.

Could somebody with W211 AMG wheel measure the lug holes diameter please?

Thank you in advance.
