Question Springs, Larger rims, Much lower profile tires.... Performance?

Hey guys. I have a short wheel base W140 big body benz (S320). I want to upgrade my wheels, tires, and springs to give it a much nicer look.

will running 18 AMG monoblock with 40 profile tires (instead of 16's with 60 profile) help cornering? I hear it helps steering responce and etc. is this true? some say that 18's w/ 40 profile on W140 are too small and I would need to drop 1-1.5 inch, which i would be more than happy to do b/c the suspension on the W140 is so soft to the point where at high speeds its almost feels unsafe. I would will keep stock shocks but I just want a slightly more aggressive stance.

thanks for help guys

Yes, a 40 series on a 18" rim is too small.

First of all, you don't pick the size profile you want, it picks your car and the size wheel needed! You don't go the the tire store and ask for a 40 series tire. You are supposed to get the size that fits your car which has the same height as the original tire so you don't have a speedometer error.

Tire Rack & Discount Tire suggests/recommends the following for 18" wheels:

235/50/18 (all around or front)
245/45/18 (all around or front)
255/45/18 (rear only)

If you have your heart set on 40 series tires you would need to get 19" wheels and tire size:

255/40/19 (all around or front)
285/35/19 (rear only)

to Drop a car you use lowering springs and not small height tires unless you want the look or a "lowrider" - where lowrider tire/wheel combos follow no logic when it come to "proper" wheel and tire upgrades. I hope you don't have hydraulics in your S-Class and bounce around.

depends on the weather
lower profile tires with larger wheels will increase steering response and overall handling .... no question .... and a suspension upgreade would also be a benefit to the handling and cornering of your car ... your car is typical with inherent understeer which is designed into most cars and these items would dramatically reduce that

thanks for the help guys!!!

hey guys, thanks for the excellence responce. ya i realized my error with 18 and 40 profile.

I think I will go 19's with 35 profile, what do yall think? 19 inch with 40 profile seems way to large to me. But 40 profile does provide more protection against curb rashes.

Besides 19' AMG's are cheaper so i guess it all works out for the better.

thanks again guys.

You will have to use the 255/40/19 all around because that 35 series tire on the 285/35/19 tires size is only for the rear. Good Luck.
