Tires for CLK 320 (W208)

I would like to upgrade the tires on the CLK 320 (W208) using the original wheels. The size of the OEM wheel and tire are 16x7 and 205/55 R16. I would like to change to 225/50 R16. I check the Tire Rack website and the overall diameters of the two sizes are the same, but the width of the 225 varies from 8.9" (yoko) to 9.3" (continental). The rear should be fine but I am not sure if the front can fit in 225 because I've noticed that the upper control arm of the front wheel is very close to the sidewall of the OEM tire, which is Energy MXV4 (8.3"). Does anyone upgrade their front tires to 225/50 R16? or does anyone know the clearance of the upper control arm? If 225/50 R16 doesn't fit, can I put 17" wheel on my CLK 320? Will that upper control arm have enough clearance for 17" tires because width of 225/45 R17 is also around 8.8-9.0".
