Opinions on tires
It is noteworthy that Adam has noted that his 19' Michelin PS2's ride better than the stock 18" Bridgestone RE050's. My only experience with Pilot Sport tires is with the ones on our 03 SL500 Sport (18"). I do not if/how they differ from the PS2's, but on the SL, they were not necesarily smooth and did not deliver the traction in corners that I had expected. The Bridgestones on my CL, however, provide extremely good cornering grip and surprisingly good wet traction. I find them to be much better than the Dunlop 9000 Sport tires on my 02 CL500 Sport.
I would be interested in others' opinions of the tires that they have on their CL55's.

The michelin pilot sport 2 is a completely different tire than the Pilot sport 1, they are non directional which typically means it will be quieter. I have had a pretty bad experience with the RE040 (never tried the 050) on my lexus, slammed over pot holes and became very noisy. The pilot sport 2 does not have the V shaped tread like the SP9000 or the Pilot sport 1, the chrysler crossfire comes with the pilot sport 2 as OE if you are interested in trying them. BTW, how is the paint on the CL lookin?

If non-directional tires are smoother riding what are the advantages of directional tires, apart perhaps from better cornering?

different car than you, but I've used a few tires in the last year. In the last year or so i've used SO-3's, contisportcontact II'2, and the PS2's. The PS2's are the best i've had. They handle a little better than the SO-3's in dry and wet, but are much quieter and smoother. Quiet and comfy for regular driving, but when you get into it, it's like a transformation. The conti's finish 3rd.
