Wheels Upgrade

My ride is a 2004 CLK320 with 16-inch stock wheels and tires. I think the car will look a lot better with bigger footprint.

I do not plan to replace any suspension components. The choice is either 17" or 18", I would like to know the difference in ride, comfort and performance of 17" and 18".

Hello Summer,

A member at another forum told me that I should consider getting the best tires I can afford to improve handling without sacrifice ride quality. Most of the people on the other fourm that have 18" all ended up modify their suspension. So my guess is 18" is out for me. I do like the look of 18".

I am still debating between getting 17" w/Max performance tire or stock w/Max performance tire. The ride quality is said to be the same with the stock but with better handling and performance.

What is your take on his perspective?

you don't need to alter the suspension to fit 18's, it will make your ride look nice. Good tires will help the ride too.

For appreaance, 18-inch will for sure look better than the 17-inch counterpart.

For a CLK320, 18-inch would be a plus-2 configuration. My main concern is the ride will become too harsh and less comfortable.

Ride will suffer with 18" tires. There is just less cushion there. Handling will change as most notably steering response will increase.
Most low pro tires have soft compound and do not last nearly as long either. Hey, these are performance tires!!! Costly also.
